One Piece's Final Villains

Blackbeard and his crew will very likely be the final villains in One Piece's epic saga. They have been absent from the scenes for a while, with fans speculating about their next action, but the best-selling manga has teased that the Blackbeard Pirates have finally made their move, which will have enormous consequences for the world of One Piece. Fans speculated that Marshal D. Teach's next objective would be the Road Poneglyph owned by Big Mom and kept in her base on Whole Cake Island. With the Empress away to fight alongside Kaido on Wano Island with some of her most powerful children, and her kingdom still reeling from the Straw Hat Pirates' recent blitz to save Sanji, this would be the best time for Blackbeard to invade Whole Cake and steal the Poneglyph. This would put him one step closer to reaching Laugh Tale and becoming the Pirate King. The latest series of One Piece's cover stories (supplemental stories told through the cover pages of select chapters) is set on Whole Cake Island, as it depicts the aftermath of Sanji's escape and the fate of two of his brothers who are being held captive there. The cover story of chapter #1046, A Pair of Intruders on Pudding's Turf, teased fans in a big way, seemingly proving their theories to be true. It shows the denizens of Chocolat Town, one of the cities in Big Mom's kingdom, running away from two shadowy figures, of whom just the feet are being shown.

One Piece's creator Eiichiro Oda could be saving the appearance of the Blackbeard pirates - which will have major repercussions for the rest of the series - for one of the next chapters, when the current fight between Luffy and Kaido, also a major event, will finally come to its epic conclusion. Fans are also trying to corroborate this theory by pointing out similarities between the silhouette shown in the cover story and some members of Blackbeard's crew. Others have brought up inconsistencies in the behavior of Oven, one of Big Mom's sons, throughout the cover stories, which could mean he has been replaced by Catarina Devon, who possesses a Devil Fruit that allows her to mimic other people's appearance. This could have happened after part 7 of the cover story (chapter #1043), where a group of shadowy figures could be (barely) seen in the distance, waiting for Oven as if to ambush him.

The fact that chapter #1047 did not feature a cover story could be a major hint that Oda is waiting for the perfect moment for this big reveal. It is very likely that, towards the end of the manga, Luffy and Blackbeard will be racing towards Laugh Tale and the One Piece treasure waiting there. While the series still has quite a bit left to go, One Piece is undoubtedly reaching its endgame, especially given developments like Luffy unlocking his Gear 5 powers and several big mysteries getting solved. Given all this, it only makes sense for the series to finally hint at a confrontation between Luffy and Blackbeard. The current cover story could have teased the appearance of One Piece's final villains and thus the beginning of the endgame for the best-selling manga in history.
