New Look At Samaritan Sylvester Stallone's Retired Superhero

Sylvester Stallone is a grizzled old retired superhero in a new image from the long-awaited movie Samaritan. Stallone of course became a screen legend playing the underdog boxer Rocky Balboa and the underdog soldier John Rambo in two of film history’s most successful franchises. Now the star will try to make magic again by playing an underdog ex-superhero in the gritty action movie Samaritan.

Superheroes of course were not such a big deal back when Stallone was raking in huge money as a worldwide action superstar in the 1980s and 1990s. But the Hollywood landscape has definitely changed in the last few decades, and Stallone has been forced to adapt along with it. The Rocky star obviously has already appeared in one huge comic book movie franchise, playing Stakar Ogord in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (a role he will reprise in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3). Samaritan however sees Stallone not as a supporting performer but a full headliner, playing a once-famous superhero who’s vanished entirely from the scene until a young boy (Javon Walton) finds him living anonymously as a garbage man. Stallone's superhero turn in Samaritan indeed was originally supposed to come out in theaters way back in November of 2020 but various delays have put that release off until summer of 2022. Not many glimpses have been seen of the oft-delayed movie so far, but Fandango does have a new image showing Stallone in full retired-superhero mode walking the filthy streets with his new young friend. The above new image indeed gives a rare look at a movie that for whatever reason is thus far flying under the radar when it comes to upcoming 2022 releases. A trailer for Samaritan was in fact shown at CinemaCon in 2021, and some footage was previewed at 2022’s CinemaCon that showed Stallone among other things flashing his quick-healing superhero powers and getting into a huge warehouse fight with multiple bad guys. Given that the movie is finally set to come out in a few months, it seems some kind of trailer should be arriving sooner rather than later.

A big deal to see Stallone making his first starring foray in the world of superhero movies after all these years. Of course it’s easy to understand why Stallone would be hesitant to do such comic book-type material given the major disaster his Judge Dredd movie turned out to be back in 1995. But hopefully the star will have a better experience with Samaritan, playing a character who seems to be something of a reluctant hero and typically Stallone-esque underdog. The movie is set for release on August 26, 2022.
