Kevin Feige Supported Ms. Marvel Directors Working On DC's Batgirl Movie

Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah say that Kevin Feige is "a real fanboy" who supported their work on the DCEU Batgirl movie. Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah say that Marvel boss Kevin Feige was supportive of them working on the DCEU’s Batgirl movie. The duo, who also directed 2020’s Bad Boys For Life, were tapped to serve as the lead directors on the MCU’s latest television series in the same year. Following the adventures of the comic book character Kamala Khan, played by newcomer Iman Vellani, the six-episode Ms. Marvel series made its streaming debut on Disney+ last week and has enjoyed plenty of critical praise.

Plans for a solo Batgirl movie have been in the pipeline over at Warner Bros. since as early as 2017. The film was originally intended to be written and directed by director Joss Whedon, though he left the project less than 12 months after his involvement was first announced. Shortly after his departure, Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson was tapped to pen the script after she finished work on another DCEU project, The Flash starring Ezra Miller. El Arbi and Fallah, self-confessed fans of the character, were announced as directors in May last year ahead of Leslie Grace securing the leading role in July. El Arbi and Fallah recently spoke with THR about their work on Batgirl and revealed Marvel’s response to them working on the project. Suggesting that Feige, along with Ms. Marvel executive producers Victoria Alonso and Louis D’Esposito, congratulated them on securing the project, the duo also shot down ideas of any rivalry between the two superhero franchises. El Arbi even described Feige as a “real fanboy” who constantly asked questions about the pair’s plans for the Batgirl project.

El Arbi and Fallah aren’t the only Marvel directors to make their way over to the DCEU, and Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn made his own DC debut with The Suicide Squad, following this up with his HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker. Gunn himself revealed that Feige and D’Esposito both visited him on the set of The Suicide Squad to see his work on the film. To further support the Batgirl directors' comments, Gunn also seemingly has other projects planned within the DCEU once he finishes working on the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Feige and his team. While many fans may like to debate the comparative strengths and weaknesses of both the Marvel and DC franchises, ultimately, both studios seem to benefit from sharing creative talent both behind and in front of the camera. Not only does Batgirl boast the acclaimed Ms. Marvel directors, but it is also set to see Michael Keaton, who played Adrian Toomes/Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, reprise his role as DC's Batman. Hopefully, the future may see other Marvel cast and crew make their way over to the DC universe (and vice-versa) as both franchises seek to expand their respective universes with the best talent possible.
